The accident at the Halewijn tram stop took place around 10.15 am Sunday morning. “An elderly man of 91 years was hit on Blancefloerlaan. Unfortunately, he died of his injuries on the spot, ”says Willem Migom of the Antwerp police.
The police were notified by a bus driver, but the circumstances of the accident were initially unclear. “For the sake of clarity, the bus driver who made the report did not cause or see the accident happen,” it sounds. During the investigation into the circumstances, another bus came into the picture.
That bus and the driver, who drives for a subcontractor of De Lijn, were searched and found a little later. “The 45-year-old bus driver was arrested and will be questioned on Sunday evening. The bus in question was confiscated for trace research, ”says Lieselotte Claessens of the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office. It is not yet clear whether or not the driver was aware of the collision and therefore committed a hit-and-run crime.
