Tennis player Petra Kvitová did not use four match balls and finished in the round of 16 at the grand slam US Open. The tournament six lost in two hours and 39 minutes to Shelby Rogers at home 6: 7, 6: 3 and 6: 7.
The last Czech representative in the competition is Karolína Muchová, who will have a duel of the 4th round with Belarusian Viktoria Azarenková on Monday.
In the initial balanced set full of sharp exchanges, Kvitová lost the first service in the seventh game, but then regained her break. The tie-break started with four mistakes, evenly tied at 5: 5, but the bravely playing Rogers finished the first set with a ball in the corner.
In the second set, Kvitová turned two breakballs away to 0: 2 and drove off. While the tennis world absorbed the shocking disqualification of Serb Novak Djokovic for firing the ball into the line referee, the Czech player bet the winning strokes and forced a third set.
At the beginning of the decisive act, she lost her service, but returned to the game with a break at 2: 2. She was already sure of her service and with a score of 5: 4 she had three matchballs at Rogers’ service, but the 93rd player in the world rankings always played well. The set reached the tie-break and Kvitová had the fourth match with a score of 6: 5, but she made a double mistake and lost two more balls.
Kvitová, a two-time Wimbledon winner at the US Open, remains the maximum two participants in the quarterfinals of 2015 and 2017. The American grand slam is the only one in the Big Four tournament that did not make it to the semifinals.
Květa Peschkeová was the last Czech debutist at the US Open in the quarterfinals. Together with the Dutch Demi Schuursová, the unseen pair of young Russians Anna Blinková and Veronica Kuděrmětová lost 4: 6 and 2: 6 from the position of tournament fours.
Forty-five-year-old Peschke and Schuurs won the US Open general in New York last week, and the Czech tennis player won her 35th triumph. However, she did not reach the semifinals at the American Grand Slam for the third time in her career.
At the same time, Peschke and Schuurs started the quarterfinals well, leading 3: 0 and 4: 1. But then they lost five games in a row. In the second set, they still managed to react to the loss of service in the third game, but from the state of 2: 2, only the opponents collected the games.
The 2011 Wimbledon winner and former world number one Peschke made the farthest finish in the 2006 and 2007 semifinals at the US Open.
The Russians scored the second Czech scalp. A round earlier, they eliminated Kateřina Siniaková, who formed the eighth seeded pair with the German Anna-Lenna Friedsamová, because her traditional teammate Barbora Krejčíková did not go to New York due to the coronavirus. Lucie Hradecká and Slovenian Andreja Klepačová also finished in the second round.
The quarterfinals were also final today for defending champion Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenková. The second Belgian-Belarusian pair was not enough for the German Laura Siegemundová with the Russian Věra Zvonareva and lost 4: 6, 6: 7.
