In Austria, the weekend is run in a sprint format. The riders already fought for the fastest time for one lap on Friday afternoon.
Especially in the first and second part, the drivers had problems with the track limits. We have seen many deleted times.
Ricciardo, Stroll, Chou, Latifi and Vettel did not advance from the first part of qualifying. Austria is thus yet another bad weekend for Aston Martin or for Daniel Ricciardo. However, his teammate didn’t fare much better. Norris had brake problems in the middle section and finished last.
Gasly, Albon, Bottas, Cunoda and Norris did not advance to the third part. On the contrary, the progress was successful for both drivers of the Haas team.
The third part of qualifying was interrupted twice by red flags. In both cases, the Mercedes drivers took care of them. Lewis Hamilton, who flew off the track in the eighth corner, was the first to demolish the front of his car. Moments later, George Russell was breaking the rear of the car in the last tenth corner.
Before the second red flags, the Ferrari drivers went out for the second attempts. They did not have fresh tires at the restart of qualifying after Russell’s accident.
The fastest time was set by Max Verstappen, who was not the fastest in any of the sectors, but put together an ideal lap. The Ferrari drivers finished behind him with a loss of less than a tenth of a second.
