Verstappen Urges Change in Track Limits at Red Bull Ring

today, 07:44 | by Mike van Weert

Max Verstappen is clearly unhappy about the number of laps that were taken away due to track limits. The Red Bull Racing driver himself was also guilty of exceeding the track limits, but he was certainly not alone in this. The reigning world champion believes that the drivers seemed amateurs with the amount of lap times deleted. Verstappen therefore argues for a change, but it will be difficult to apply this to the Red Bull Ring.

Verstappen took pole position for Sunday on Friday, but the Red Bull driver stated immediately after qualifying that it went anything but smoothly. Track limits were again a subject of discussion, although it is mainly due to the Red Bull Ring. “I think it’s one of the worst tracks in terms of track limits,” Verstappen told F1Maximum, among others. “Towards the end of the lap the tires get very hot, so they are not as agile as they were at the beginning of the lap. It’s also just incredibly difficult to estimate where you are now.’

The Dutchman saw a lap time taken away several times and the track limits were also the reason that Sergio Pérez again failed to make it to Q3. ‘I thought it looked very ridiculous. It almost seemed like we were amateurs, given the number of lap times that were dropped.’ Verstappen saw that in some cases it was about the smallest margins. ‘Of course people can say: Yes, just stay within the white lines. Well, if it were that easy, you could take my car and try it for yourself.’

Verstappen: ‘The motorcyclists don’t want that’

Verstappen is already known as a driver who likes an old-fashioned circuit. The two-time world champion therefore proposes an old-fashioned solution, but it is not easy to implement. “It can be easily solved by just putting gravel next to the curbs, but the motorcyclists don’t want that. So it’s just really hard to come up with a solution because you also don’t want the organisers, you know, the track in general, to put gravel and have to take it away again.”
