On Saturday, the fastest in qualifying were Mercedes pilot George Russell and Ferrari pilot Carlos Sainz Jr., who started the main race on Sunday from the first row. Verstappen, on the other hand, took only tenth place due to technical problems, which made Sunday’s race start from the fifth row.
Russell was in the lead at the start of the race, but he was overtaken by Charles LeClair, but as soon as the Ferrari driver entered the pits, Russell immediately returned to the lead, building up a lead of over a second.
In the continuation, on the 31st lap, Russell was once again overtaken by Leclair, who was faster than Sainz in the second half of the race, with Lewis Hamilton (“Mercedes”) taking the second position.
As the race drew to a close, Hamilton and Verstappen battled for victory, with Verstappen still more than five seconds behind the leading Mercedes driver with 20 laps to go, while Leclair was just under three seconds behind the Dutchman.
At the moment when Hamilton had to go to the pits, Verstappen rose to the leading position, while Leclair took the second place, who was then “squeezed out” of his position by Russell.
Verstappen built up a lead of almost eight seconds by the end of the race to take a clear victory, but Mercedes drivers Hamilton and Russell took second and third place respectively.
Sainz remained outside the top three, but fifth place was won by Sergio Perez (“Red Bull”). Sixth place was taken by LeClair, one position lower was Lando Norris (“McLaren”), while “Alpine” driver Fernando Alonso was in eighth place. Esteban Ocon (Alpine) finished ninth and Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) completed the top ten.
Verstappen is the leader in the World Championship standings with 258 points, Leclair is second with 178 points, and Perez is in third place with 163 points. In the constructors’ cup, “Red Bull” has 431 points, “Ferrari” follows with 334 points, and “Mercedes” is third with 304 points.
Last year, Verstappen clinched his first career F1 world title on the final lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, ahead of seven-time champion Hamilton, with whom he was tied on points before the final stage.
This season, the F-1 calendar has 22 stages.
