Max Verstappen has admitted that the development of the Red Bull RB20 race car has gone somewhere in the wrong direction resulting in balance problems and increased tire wear. At the stage in the Netherlands, the leader of the F1 championship lost to the McLaren pilot Lando Norris by 22 seconds.
Verstappen hasn’t won five stages in a row, though Norris’s devastating direction in the Dutch family doctor he pointed out that the car “McLaren” has certainly become faster than “Red Bull” at the moment.
“It wasn’t like that in the first few races, but then something made the car harder to drive,” said Verstappen after the Zandvoort stage. “It’s very difficult to know where this is coming from right now. And this creates problems, affecting our performance in one fast lap and also in long distances. We had the same problems all weekend. From the first use, the car had a consistent balance. It’s very difficult to deal with right now. It seems we are too slow and the tires are wearing out more. It is strange, because in recent years we have been strong in this regard. Nine stages before the end of the season, Verstappen’s advantage over Norris in the overall standings is 70 points, which still looks very safe at the moment. At the same time, in the Constructors’ Cup, “McLaren” managed to get close to “Red Bull” with 30 points.
“Red Bull” team manager Christian Horner also admits that there is a problem at the moment, the cause of which has not been found, but it is being actively worked on. He believes that as soon as the balance of power changes, it can tighten again for the team represented by Verstappen and Sergio Perez.
“Given our performance, the next nine races are going to be very difficult,” said Horner. “But this is the fourth time, just the fourth time this season, that Max’s lead has gone down. And this is only Lando’s second victory. However, we understand that the pace must be improved. We must be careful to keep the lead growing, not shrinking of course, took this step ahead of time, and here their car looked impressive with Lando at the wheel.
