Max Verstappen surprisingly qualified second for the Singapore Grand Prix yesterday. The Dutchman is obviously aiming for victory, but he emphasizes that he is mainly working on another goal.
After a disastrous Friday, Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing made a great turnaround during qualifying. The 26-year-old Dutchman recorded the second fastest time in the qualifying session and therefore has every chance to compete for victory. If the three-time world champion crosses the finish line first this afternoon, he will finally win a Formula 1 Grand Prix again after seven races without a win.
Problems still present
The Dutchman is keeping his options open, however. He emphasises that second place in qualifying is no guarantee for a good race. “We still have limitations on street circuits. We tried to work around them and I think that worked out quite well in qualifying, but we are still coming up short,” the Red Bull driver explained to Sky Sports. “That last bit is still missing and that is where those limitations come to the fore. On paper, it is undoubtedly the worst circuit of the season in our case, so I am very happy with that first starting row.”
“I want to win”
Despite the problems, Verstappen wants to go all out for victory at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Although he will mainly focus on a different goal during the race. “I do want to win and I really want to go for it. If I see an opportunity, I will go for it. But scoring as many points as possible per race is of course more important. We have been falling short all weekend, especially compared to McLaren and Lando. They really seem to be getting wings here, so the gap could easily have been bigger. So it’s really great that I share the front row with Lando and if I see an opportunity somewhere, I’ll go for it. But in the end the season is still long and there are still plenty of races where I have to deliver a good performance,” concludes the championship leader.
