Cloudy. Dry. Air +27С, route +44…33С
In the course of the weekend, the track in Miami showed character. The organizers laid new asphalt, it turned out to be smooth and slippery, which did not allow the rubber to warm up effectively, but in hot weather it warmed up by itself – and not in the way the teams needed. Some have won on this, others have fallen back. In particular, both McLaren racers dropped out of the fight already in the first part of the qualification, and Lewis Hamilton finished the fight in the second.
At the same time, last year’s main problem of the route remained. Good grip was only on the trajectory, a shift to the side where the asphalt was dirty could lead to a U-turn and take off, but the rain that had passed on the night before the race washed away not only the layer of used rubber, but the dirt, so it even became easier to overtake.
Charles Leclerc crashed his car twice during the weekend – and the second accident led to the early completion of qualifying under red flags. The results were unexpected. Sergio Perez started from pole, and his team-mate Max Verstappen, who was in the lead during the weekend – only ninth – in the decisive attempt, he was behind Leclerc and interrupted it due to red flags.
Perez and Alonso started the race from the first row of the starting field, Sainz and Magnussen from the second, Gasly and Russell from the third.
Pirelli brought to the stage the “middle” three compositions, well known to the teams this season – C2, C3 and C4 in the role of Hard, Medium and Soft, but in Miami the tires worked differently. Medium and Soft granulated quickly, and Hard allowed for a longer distance, which the teams took into account when choosing a strategy.
Before the start, the stage was set up on the main straight, the orchestra was assembled, rapper LL Cool J was called – and he introduced the riders to the audience.
In the race, Okon, Verstappen, Hulkenberg, Hamilton, Zhou, Tsunoda and Stroll started on Hard, Norris and Piastri on Soft, the rest on Medium.
At the start, Perez kept the lead. Magnussen lost three positions, Bottas was ahead of Ocon and Verstappen. Piastri won back five places on the Soft, and Norris lost three after contact with de Vries.
