Verstappen nuances problems after qualifying: “Nothing to worry about”

After qualifying for the Grand Prix of Great Britain, Verstappen knows that he missed the fastest qualifying time due to problems with understeer, words he would later repeat and explain further in front of the camera of Formula One.

“It felt weird. The car was quite competitive and I had a lot of grip, but in the corners that you really have to attack, I just didn’t have the grip at the front. It had nothing to do with the setup, but the tires. They didn’t seem to have the grip. We need to figure out what that has to do with because the things we tried to fix it didn’t make me feel any better.”

“With understeer in qualifying you’re just slow and from that perspective it’s good that we were still so close, especially because it’s on a track where Mercedes always goes well. So it’s not something to worry about. I’m disappointed, because I want to start first, but we still have the sprint qualifying and the race ahead of us to try and get them back.”

Interviewer Will Buxton noticed that Red Bull tinkered with Verstappen’s car just before qualifying. Was that perhaps to counter the understeer problems? “No, we discovered a leak, but that was all fixed in time.”

Asked whether Verstappen has a winning car, Verstappen answers that Red Bull will have to work for a while: “If we fix those problems, I’m sure we can do it well.” And can Red Bull fix that? “No idea, we’ll see,” he replies with a wink.
