Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen dominated the third free practice session of the Japanese Grand Prix, the 19th round of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship.
At the start of the session, Mercedes’ George Russell took to the track, followed by Sainz and Gasly, and most of the drivers had different types of tires in the first dry run of the weekend.
Russell opened the program with 1: 37.467 minutes, but Sainz managed to record 1: 35.491 minutes, so Norris recorded 1: 34.236 minutes.
After Verstappen’s exit, he managed to climb the overall standings after recording 1: 32.050d, ahead of Perez in second place and Norris and Ricciardo in third and fourth place respectively.
As usual, Latifi came out badly in the last double corner, but managed to get back on track without problems and his team said the wind was too strong.
The top five drivers set their sprints on soft tires, at which point the Mercedes pair of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were 14th and 15th respectively.
Hamilton advanced to third in the interval of the session, 1.2 seconds behind Verstappen’s time, after which the world champion fell to fourth after Russell finished in second place against Perez.
Verstappen fell to third place after the Ferrari duo of Sainz and Leclerc advanced to first and third position, so the ranking of the top ten places 20 minutes from the end of the session is as follows, Sainz in the lead, Leclerc, Verstappen, Alonso, Ocon, Tsunoda, Hamilton, Gasly and Russell.
Albon then managed to move up to fourth after improving his time to 1: 32.399, but Perez snatched the position from him using medium tires, as the Haas driver fell to fifth.
Verstappen took first place after recording 1: 30.671 minutes on the Soft tires, which were handled by all the riders except Guanyu Gu, who mounted the medium tires.
