“It was hard work, but of course I’m happy,” said Verstappen.
Second was Australian Oscar Piastri (McLaren), who temporarily led the race after an early pit stop. “I’m very happy with second place. It wasn’t a question of whether Max would pass, it was a question of when it would happen,” said Piastri: “Nevertheless, we’re on the right track.”
Pierre Gasly (France) brought the struggling Alpine team a sense of achievement in third place. “The last few races were difficult and not very successful. Getting this good result means a lot to me,” says Gasly. Nico Hülkenberg (Emmerich/Haas) worked his way up from last place on the grid to 17th place, but didn’t get a point.
Verstappen continued to extend his lead in the World Championship, he is now 118 points clear of his closest “chaser” Sergio Perez. The high-flyer’s Mexican team-mate retired after a duel with record world champion Lewis Hamilton (Great Britain/Mercedes). On Sunday (3 p.m. / Sky) Verstappen is aiming for the next victory, he will start the Grand Prix from sixth place after a penalty.
