Overtaking is very difficult on the high-speed circuit of Monza, as it turned out during the sprint race. Only Sergio Perez managed to successfully overtake the drivers from the top 10. Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, was trapped 18 laps behind Lando Norris.
Max Verstappen is not too concerned about the pace of the McLarens, he only knows that it has to happen at the start: “We still have to see which tires we start on. It is crucial to stay at the start for the McLarens, but I’m not worried about that at the moment.”
RacingNews365 asked Verstappen if he was surprised by McLaren’s pace. “In the race they were nowhere to be against us. As long as I stay ahead of them in the first two corners they are normally no threat.”
In the sprint race Hamilton showed how difficult it is to overtake at Monza. Verstappen expects his rival to outwit at least one of the McLarens during the race on Sunday.
“That is mainly because it is difficult to overtake. In the beginning Lando was of course close behind Daniel and therefore he also had a slipstream. In addition, they also have a very high top speed. But tomorrow we also have to do a pit stop, then you will get there always one over. Obviously they can’t both cover Lewis.”
