Austin. The Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) will start the race on Saturday from the first place on the grid sprint of the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, while the Argentine Franco Colapinto will start from a surprising tenth position.
The 21-year-old Williams team driver unexpectedly entered the third part of the qualifying session held at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin (Texas) this Friday.
Colapinto finished the qualy 1,573 behind leader Verstappen and will debut in a race sprint starting from tenth position.
Verstappen, three-time world champion, took over the race at the last moment pole with a time of 1 minute and 32.833 seconds, with an advantage of 0.012 over the British George Russell (Mercedes) and 0.226 over the Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari).
Lando Norris (McLaren), second in the World Championship classification, was fourth at 0.250 and the Spanish Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) fifth at 0.256.
The Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) was eliminated in the second part of the session and will start from eleventh place while the Spanish veteran Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) will start from fourteenth.
The race sprint It takes place over just over 100 kilometers, lasting half an hour, and the winner gets eight points towards the World Cup classification.
