Veronica King is the first recipient of the new Hessian Prize for Lesbian Visibility. Twelve activists and organizations were nominated.
The social pedagogue Veronica King from Kassel is the first recipient of the newly created Hessian Prize for Lesbian Visibility. “She is a role model for many young people, especially in the rural regions of North Hesse,” said Minister of Social Affairs Kai Klose (Greens) in recognition of the activist.
The prize, which is endowed with 10,000 euros, was to be presented on Wednesday evening in Biebrich Castle. It is planned that it will be awarded every two years.
Veronica King is visible as a black lesbian woman, shares her experiences and works with a lot of energy to develop structures, it was said to justify. King is involved in women’s and youth work, in club and recreational sports, in administration, in the organization of Christopher Street Day Kassel and in theater projects.
According to the Ministry of Social Affairs, a total of twelve organizations and people were proposed for the award. This included Erika Wild, the owner of the Frankfurt bar “La Gata”, which was founded in 1971 and is considered the world’s oldest lesbian bar. Other nominees were the Wiesbaden Women’s Museum and its co-founder Kim Engels, the Darmstadt Women’s Culture Center, the Frankfurt Lesbian Archive, the Dyke * March Rhein-Main and the “Liederliche Lesben” choir.
Yvonne Ford, the organizer of the “Lesbian Autumn”, the Lesbian Information and Advice Center (Libs) from Frankfurt, the “Lesbians against the Right” and the head of the “Live nonviolent” advice center, Constance Ohms, were also on the list.
