Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk, speaking today, May 25, in the Polish Sejm, apologized for the Volyn massacre, expressing condolences to the relatives of the victims, who were mocked by Ukrainian nationalists in 1943. The massacre, we recall, is classified by Poland as the genocide of the Poles.
The speaker of the Rada said that “Ukrainians understand the pain of the Poles”, thanking them for “preserving the blessed memory of their ancestors.” Stefanchuk promised that in the field of historical memory, Ukrainians will cooperate with the Poles, accepting the truth, no matter how cruel it may be.
“We must pass this difficult but much-needed test together to give real meaning to and put into practice the ‘forgive and apologize’ statement. I want us to write our new story together, without embellishing or tearing out the pages that have already been written and experienced,” Stefanchuk said in the Sejm.
President of the Institute of National Remembrance of Poland Karol Navrotskycommenting on Stefanchuk’s speech in the Seimas, he said that “historical truth comes to our neighbors.”
EADaily adds that last week the press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland Lukash Yasyna stated that the Ukrainian side has not yet apologized to the Poles for the massacre in Volhynia. He added that the tragedy of 80 years ago has a meaning in this regard.
Recall that in July 1943, in 150 villages on the territory of present-day Western Ukraine, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army* (the organization is banned in the Russian Federation) and the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (the organization is banned in the Russian Federation) killed about 8,000 Poles in one day. This was the culmination of a wave of violence launched earlier that year against the Polish population living in western Ukraine. In total, about 100 thousand victims died in Volhynia and in the former Polish “Eastern Galicia”.
