Verkehr – Bremen – Schaefer: Stricter fines increase traffic safety – economy

Bremen (dpa) – The chairman of the Conference of Transport Ministers (VKM), Bremen’s Senator for Mobility Maike Schaefer (Greens), has welcomed the Federal Council’s decision to significantly tighten the catalog of fines in the road traffic regulations. “The amendment was overdue. I am glad that we have now been able to resolve the blockade amicably. The changes will significantly contribute to more road safety, especially for pedestrians and cyclists,” said Schaefer on Friday.

The new catalog provides, among other things, noticeably higher fines for drivers who are traveling at excessive speed and are flashed. “This should be a clear signal to speeders that they will be asked to pay if they don’t follow the rules of the game. Excessive speed is one of the most common causes of accidents. That must end,” said the Green politician.

The Federal Council approved the new regulation on Friday. Now Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) still has to sign the ordinance. According to the ordinance, the changes will come into effect three weeks after the announcement. For example, if you drive 20 kilometers an hour too fast in built-up areas and get a lightning bolt, you will soon pay 70 euros instead of 35.
