The Verdi union has called on cinema employees of the Cinemaxx and Cinestar companies nationwide to take industrial action. Cinemas in Bremen and Lower Saxony are also affected.
The Cinemaxx cinemas in Hanover, Göttingen and Oldenburg will be on strike on Friday. The employees at Cinemaxx Bremen went on strike on Saturday afternoon. The strikes are scheduled to end at midnight.
“Work in the cinema takes place when most others have finished work. That’s why we are calling for an appropriate starting salary of 14 euros per hour instead of the minimum wage,” says Verdi media secretary Peter Dinkloh. The starting wages at Cinemaxx currently reflect the legal minimum wage.
The Cinemaxx cinemas should operate as usual despite the strike, as the company announced at the request of buten un binnen. We want to offer a comfortable visit to the cinema, but ask for your understanding if there are longer waiting times at the entrance or in the catering area. If screenings are canceled, please inform Cinemaxx on its own website. Tickets that have already been purchased would then be refunded. The company does not currently wish to comment on the ongoing negotiations with Verdi.
Warning strikes from Thursday to Sunday
Cinemaxx is one of the largest cinema operators in Germany. In 2023, the company was able to do well with films such as “Avatar 2”, “Super Mario Bros.” “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” had a successful year at the cinema. “With the warning strikes, we sent a clear signal to employers that they should take our demands seriously,” says Dinkloh.
