Verdi is making an announcement in the southwest: work stoppages are planned this Friday in several cities and their surrounding areas, as the union’s regional district announced early this morning. According to a spokesman, they should start between seven and eight o’clock. There are strikes in Karlsruhe, Mannheim, Ludwigsburg, Heilbronn and Göppingen, among others.
Pressure on the employer side
The work stoppages are intended to put further pressure on employers in the ongoing collective bargaining, which has been going on for just over six months in retail and mail order and for more than five months in wholesale and foreign trade, as the union explained.
Verdi is calling for a wage increase of around 13 percent for employees in wholesale and foreign trade and an increase in training allowances of 175 euros. For retail employees, the union is demanding a 15 percent increase in wages and 200 euros more training allowances per month.
Verdi has called on employees at Kaufland, H&M, Ikea, Obi, Primark, Zara and Edeka, among others, to go on warning strike.
Probably 10,000 employees are involved across the country
Nationwide, around 10,000 employees are expected to stop work this Friday, as the union announced on Thursday. In the protracted struggle for new collective agreements, Verdi and employers cannot reach a common denominator.
Verdi accuses the employers of a “blockade attitude”. The union complains that their offers ignored the employees’ need for survival. Employers, on the other hand, point to the difficult economic situation of the companies. (dpa)
