The chairman of the service union verdi, Frank Werneke, has clear words for the organizers on the occasion of the German Employers’ Day. “In my opinion, there’s a bit of traffic light bashing going on at the employers’ day and not enough attention is paid to what responsibility the economy actually has,” says Werneke in an interview with the television station Phoenix. The verdi boss emphasizes that there is a significant need for investment “in public infrastructure, in transport routes, in the education system, in the energy transition” in Germany, but the BDA (Federal Association of German Employers’ Associations) regularly evades the question of its financing. “We live under the dictates of the debt brake,” said Werneke, and employers are not fulfilling their responsibility to initiate necessary reforms. He affirms: “I would like employers to finally come to a clear position that is non-ideological and recognizes the realities.”

Although Werneke shares the BDA’s criticism of the government’s plans for hospital reform, he vehemently disagrees with regard to Pension Package II: “In my view, the criticism of Pension Package II is completely unworthy.” He continues: “If pension package II does not come, then that will mean an even further drop in pension levels for future pensioners.” In his opinion, the BDA has become completely obstinate and has “lost all reality and empathy for those people who work really hard and then have to somehow make ends meet with the already meager pension.”
