Verdensbro Downsizing Due to Lack of Financial Support: Board Implements Layoffs and Pay Cuts

(Halden Arbeiderblad) Due to lack of financial support from county and state, downsizing World Bridge with two positions.

This is stated in a press release sent out on Friday afternoon.

In addition, the implementation of Children’s World Days in Halden 2024 will be put on hold, and pay cuts will be implemented for the general manager.

“The board prioritizes the continuation of fixed, weekly offers, the annual Fargespill performance in Halden with the Norwegian Blue Ensemble, as well as regional development of offers in Halden, Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg,” the press release states.

Verdensbro has worked over several years to secure support for operations from both state, county and municipality. Since only Halden Municipality has met Verdensbro with operating funds in 2024, the organization is now in a challenging financial situation.

This means that the board, among other things, feels compelled to take the following measures:

• Terminations of two employees

• Salary reduction for the general manager

• The three-day Children’s World Days festival in Halden will not take place in 2024.

In order for Verdensbro’s offer to be the least likely to suffer damage, the board has chosen to prioritize the following:

• All fixed, weekly offers throughout the year are continued.

• Performances with Fargespill Østfold and the Norwegian Wind Ensemble will take place in April 2024.

• The regional focus on offers in Halden, Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg will be continued and further developed.

• Family events throughout the year are carried out as far as possible.

The press release further states:

“The administration and the board are working hard to come into the county and state budget next year. Verdensbro has received funds from BUFDIR to develop services in Sarpsborg, which will be started during 2024.”

– The further regional investment requires that we succeed in getting operating subsidies from the county and state.

The press release is signed by general manager Ove Billington, who points out:

– These measures are a necessary consolidation to ensure Verdensbro’s operation in the years to come. The remaining employees continue to work to further develop Verdensbro’s offer, with the aim of reaching even more children, young people and families with children, states Billington.

Since its start in 2021, Verdensbro has had an ever-increasing support, which the figures for 2023 clearly show:

• 1,600 actively participating children and young people aged 3-21
• 13,000 audience members – children, young people and adults
• 260 activities in Halden and Fredrikstad
• 75,000 digital audiences
• 70 committed artists and cultural workers
• 1,000 hours of voluntary work
