Véran is considering local containment in the Alpes-Maritimes

The Minister of Health Olivier Véran asked this Saturday the prefect and elected officials of the Alpes-Maritimes to take “additional measures” between now and Sunday evening, such as a strengthening of the curfew or a “partial or total confinement”, to deal with the outbreak of Covid-19.

“I ask the prefect to continue the consultation (…) with all the elected representatives of the territory so that, by the end of the weekend, we can take additional measures to protect this population of the Alps- Maritimes faced with this epidemic outbreak. It could take the form of an increase in the curfew, or even partial or total confinement, “said the minister during a visit to Nice.

These measures can range from “a reinforced curfew to local containment on weekends,” the minister then said on Twitter.

The mayor of Nice in favor of confinement

LR mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, who applauded the decision to implement a curfew, said he was in favor of the idea of partial or total confinement.

“If we were to go to partial confinement or a little more important in the coming days depending on the evolution of the epidemic, I would support them in the same way, for example a confinement on the occasion of each week. end, ”he said.

In the Alpes-Maritimes, the positivity rate for detection tests is greater than 10%, against a national average of 6% and the incidence rate reached 587 per 100,000 inhabitants on Friday, according to the Regional Health Authority ( ARS).

In the metropolis of Nice, this rate exceeds 700, or more than three times the national average (190).

With such rates, “local containment is a hypothesis on the table,” observed Mr. Véran, stressing that the government could be required to make “more territorial decisions” in places where “the virus circulates a lot, really a lot. “.

The Minister of Health has also announced additional measures, including a strengthening of checks on compliance with health instructions, “massive screening” in schools at the start of the school year with saliva tests or the sending of 3,500 additional doses of the vaccine. Pfizer / BioNTech on Monday and “thousands of doses” of Astra-Zeneca’s.

“It is not the South African virus which circulates here, it is especially of the English variant”, detailed Olivier Véran.

“There are people on the Promenade des Anglais who sometimes don’t wear a mask, because they come to enjoy the fresh air and they may have the feeling that at the water’s edge they are not risking anything. . This is wrong! “, Underlined Mr. Véran. “Take care, protect yourself, everywhere,” he repeated.
