Veracruz and San Luis Potosí: The States Most Affected by Decrease in Sugarcane Milling

Los states of Veracruz and San Luis Potosí They are the states most affected by the serious decrease in sugarcane milling, warned the state leader of the National Confederation of Rural Owners (CNPR), Ángel Gómez Tapia.

The sugarcane leader warned that Veracruz, with 18 mills operating, is the main state with national affectation, having decreased its milling by 46.9 percent.

The entity has so far processed 15 million 427 thousand tons of green rod, however, compared to the past cycle, there is a minor difference of one million 94 thousand 238 tons.

“There are two affected states, Veracruz and in second is San Luis Potosí; their numbers yield more than 40 percent less ground cane. Complicated days will come for producers,” warned the leader.

He explained that among the main causes of the low yield of the sugarcane field are the extreme drought that affected different parts of the country and insufficient and inadequate fertilization of the fields.

“The situation of sugarcane producers is difficult due to the low production of cane, which will affect the income of producers by up to 10,000 pesos less per hectare,” he added.

He considered that it is a hard blow to the national sugar production, since it will be difficult to reach the figures expected at the beginning of the 2022-2023 harvest.

“At the national level, 591,023 hectares have been harvested, with a field yield of 63.8 tons of cane, that average represents an alarming decrease of less than 10 tons of cane. A drop of minus 13.7 percent with the previous one, ”he pointed out.
