The ship cannot be saved, an action is taken to retrieve the sunken property
The engine compartment of the cargo ship Vera Su, which ran aground near the Yailata area, is flooded and the hull of the vessel has holes. Thus, the ship can no longer be saved, but only to take action to retrieve the sunken property. This was announced by Cap. Ventsislav Ivanov, executive director of the Maritime Administration Executive Agency, at a briefing on the naval revolt in Kavarna, after inspecting the ship by divers today.
The engine room is filled with water and the ship’s hull is compromised. The reason is the doors that do not have a good enough seal. Thus, the vessel is considered a sunken property.
The ship is in a stagnant stable condition, which does not allow it to break. There is no way he will sink more, as he is completely lying on the bottom. The necessary documents were not seized by the divers, as the situation did not allow. As soon as possible, everything necessary for the prosecution will be obtained.
The videos and photos taken by the divers will be reviewed tomorrow. They expect from the authorities the shipowner to declare that he is either abandoning the ship or will continue to carry out some activity to retrieve it as sunken property.
It is possible to open the hatch covers to unload the load, but the operation will be very complicated.
“Things are more complicated with the shipowner because our communication is complicated, and there is a legal part that the Maritime Administration cannot cover on its own,” the captain said.
Two members of the crew also took part in the inspection, as they know the vessel best. The most optimistic date for the start of the unloading operation is November 1.
Samples will be taken from both water and nitrogen fertilizer, as there are suspicions that it contains other substances.which may cause contamination. It will be investigated whether the institutions responded in a timely and adequate manner to the situation.
The situation with the vessel has become more complicated in the last two days due to the bad weather and the waves at sea.
According to weather forecasters, the weather will continue to be rainy and the wind will continue to be strong in the coming days. The weather conditions will not improve until next Monday.
