ver.di announces further campaigns – SWR Aktuell

According to the trade union ver.di in Baden-Württemberg, more than 1,600 employees in social and educational services went on strike on Thursday for better working conditions.

Day care centers, primary school care, social services and facilities for people with disabilities in Stuttgart and Ulm were affected by the warning strikes in the social and educational services, including the youth welfare office and the school administration office in Stuttgart. Around 750 employees in social services and institutions in Baden-Württemberg went on strike on Wednesday.

More warning strikes on Friday and first week of May

According to ver.di, warning strikes will still take place on Friday in Crailsheim (Schwäbisch Hall district), Kupferzell (Hohenlohe district), Schwäbisch Hall and Karlsruhe. For the coming week, the union has announced further warning strikes across the country according to industry priorities. The trade union wants to focus on Monday, May 2nd, employees in social work, on Wednesday, May 4th, the employees of day care centers and all-day schools, and on May 5th employees of the disabled aid in warning strikes, rallies and demonstrations place.

Hanna Binder, deputy ver.di regional manager, explains the warning strikes in a ver.di press release as follows: “Since the pandemic at the latest, parents and people who need support have known what is missing when daycare centers and social facilities are closed. (…) Unfortunately, employers still haven’t understood that they have to invest more in the system if it is to be preserved. We want to change that with these strikes.” According to Binder, employees need better working conditions so that they can continue to work for society with all their strength and knowledge in the future.

330,000 employees nationwide affected

ver.di is demanding better working conditions for the around 330,000 employees affected nationwide, measures to counteract the shortage of skilled workers and classification in a higher pay group. According to ver.di Vice-President Hanna Binder, employers are using advertising campaigns to close the ever-growing shortage of skilled workers in social and educational services. According to the union, they rejected talks about improving working conditions and thus also agreements on the quality of the offers.

ver.di district manager: the profession urgently needs to be upgraded

“I have no understanding that the work of taking care of a child’s healthy soul should be worth less than that in industry,” said Martin Gross, Verdi regional manager in Baden-Württemberg, on Thursday the SWR. The profession urgently needs to be upgraded, otherwise there will be a shortage of skilled workers in the future. “I expect that a decisive step will be taken in the next round of negotiations!” said Gross.

The employers’ side had regularly criticized the warning strikes in the past and stated that they were in constructive negotiations. According to employers, around 50,000 employees in social and educational services are affected in Baden-Württemberg. The third round of negotiations is scheduled for May 16 and 17 in Potsdam.
