The Veolia Towers Hamburg lost to the Bamberg Baskets in the cup round of 16 with 64:80 (33:44). In front of 1987 spectators, a low-energy initial phase and a low-points finish decide the outcome of the cup.
Benka Barloschka: “This defeat hurts a lot. That was the first time I felt like we weren’t ready to play. Even if the result doesn’t look as bad as the Würzburg game, for me it was a worse performance today. This is the first time that I’ve been really dissatisfied and felt like there was a lack of energy. It starts with how we start the game. We are already one step further in the process than the performance we showed here today.”
Mark Hughes: “We play against really good teams here. If we are not ready, they will always hit us where it hurts. And that was the best example today, we have to work on that so that it doesn’t go like that every game. We didn’t score today, but our offense isn’t really our problem. If we can’t stop our opponents defensively, we don’t give ourselves a chance to win.”
Nico Brauner: “Important throws weren’t made today. We only scored 64 points, we have a lot more in us offensively. We have to create good throws as a team and, above all, stop the opponent on defense.”
After an energetic start in the EuroCup home game last Tuesday, head coach Barloschky also relied on the starting towers Durham, Brauner, King, Meisner and Dziewa in the round of 16 of the BBL Cup. The team of referees led by Anne Panther decided the first attack after Bamberg violated the rules on the jump ball for Hamburg, but they were unable to create their first basket success. The guests from Bamberg, in turn, scored the first long-range throw through Darius Nelson, which was quickly followed by another and made Bamberg’s 6-0 start perfect. It was Nico Brauner who scored the first points for Hamburg after 1:30 minutes and then added to them with the first successful three-point throw in the starting quarter. After difficulties passing the ball, Towers Head Coach Barloschky used a time out to wake up his team. Despite new energy and Nico Brauner, who repeatedly helped the team get the ball with his nimble hands, the Towers offense in particular was error-filled and bumpy – the ball didn’t want to fall today. When he came on in the fifth minute, Will Christmas took over the structure of the game, grabbed the ball and served Mark Hughes, who added his first points to the game with a successful lay-up at 7:16. After a subsequent strong drive to the basket, Jonas WoBo, who had recently sat out due to a minor concussion, could only be stopped with a foul and converted both free throws at the line. The Hughes-Christmas duo also worked successfully in reverse – block by Hughes, quick pass to Christmas, who rewarded the team with points. Center Aleksander Dziewa reduced the deficit to 14:20 after the first quarter.
New energy allows Towers to catch up
The Upper Franconians started the second half of the game consistently energetic with quick points thanks to Kevin Wohlrath. Tower Mark Hughes fired from the three-point line at the start – Malik Johnson followed suit, but Tower Mark Hughes had the right answer ready again – finally the ball (initially) hit its target from a distance. Hughes’ hand seemed to be running hot at that moment. Lukas Meisner also used this momentum, forcing Bamberg’s time-out with a long two-pointer in the 13th minute. A hot phase through attentive interaction, this time from Hughes and Meisner, who converted coast-to-coast, further reduced the deficit in the middle of the second quarter (26:30). With his offensive foul, Bamberg’s Onu provided further energy in the stands of the home edel-optics.de Arena, which defied Hamburg’s bad weather with 1,987 spectators. However, guest center Stanic repeatedly used his athletic body in direct duels and stopped the Towers run with a spectacular dunking, which allowed the deficit to grow to double digits for the first time (29:40) thanks to a (first) sidestep three-pointer by Woodbury . Ball thief William Christmas prevented the last Upper Franconian attack, prepared in a timeout, shortly before time expired. In contrast to the hosts (4/17), the guests went into the half-time break with a ten-point lead (33 :44).

Even after the half-time break, Bamberg continued to quickly accumulate points on the scoreboard. With a magical pass to Tower VJ King by teammate Nico Brauner, the first points of the second half of the round of 16 game in Hamburg arrived. Despite hopeful moments, Hamburg repeatedly made bad mistakes that led to ball losses and, on the other hand, collecting rebounds remained a big problem. Builder Al Durham took both points at the line after a hard foul while moving to the basket (38:50). Once again it was William Christmas who sank the first successful three-point throw of the second half to make it 40:52 and immediately afterwards drew the second offensive foul from his opponent Zach Copeland. Captain Seth Hinrichs also brought additional energy with his substitution and rewarded himself and the team for their hustle in the comeback in the second part of the third quarter (45:52), which Bamberg could only stop with a timeout. Despite good actions and an improved defense, the Towers were unable to make enough use of their chances in the crucial moments to sustainably reduce the deficit in the penultimate period of the game (50:58).
Weak offense and ball losses decide the game
As usual in this game, the Upper Franconians started the final quarter with successful baskets. With a three-point game with a bonus free throw after a foul, center Aleksander Dziewa scored the first Towers points in the last quarter (53:60). Unfortunate ball losses prevented Hamburg from finding their rhythm throughout the game, even after timeouts. Completely different from Bamberg’s Trey Woodbury, who had long since found his rhythm and now demonstrated his accuracy from any distance in the final quarter, including with his game-winning sidestep three to make it 55:68. Hamburg’s long-range throws repeatedly missed their target (5/34). Bamberg and especially Trey Woodbury, who became the top scorer of the game (21 points, 3/4 3s), were also able to score a quick basket by King after the throw-in and a nimble Al Durham with a move to the basket (59:73). on the way to the quarter-finals of the BBL Cup (64:80).
