“Ventspils”, “Ogres” and “VEF Rīga” teams celebrate victories in Latvian-Estonian league games

“Ventspils” beat the basketball players of “University of Latvia” in a difficult fight at home with 91:85 (23:22, 21:21, 26:25, 21:17).

The match went similarly, but another three and a half minutes before the end of regular time, LU was in the lead. However, Kemeron Randlss leveled the result with a long shot and then put Ventspils ahead with another accurate broadcast (85:82). Kārlis Žunda scored the guests with 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, Reinis Avotiņš scored 16 points, Arvīds Dambenieks had 12 points, and Anrijs Miškis scored ten points.

“Ventspils” season started with a difficult victory in the Kurzeme derby, defeating “Liepāja” with the guests 92:91, while LU conceded to the people of Valmiera with 70:85.

Last season, Ventspils residents finished in fourth place at the moment of stopping the competition and were also favorites in this fight. In mutual games in the 2019/2020 season, “Ventspils” celebrated two convincing victories – 98:61 and 97:76. Since October 2011, Ventspils residents have celebrated 25 consecutive victories over students in LIBL and LBL competitions.

Meanwhile, the “Ogre” team defeated the “Valmiera Glass” / “Vidzeme University College” unit with 86:67 (29:16, 12:14, 23:27, 22:10).

For Ogre’s, Uģis Pinete was the most productive with 17 points, Kaspars Bērziņš had 13 points and 12 rebounds, but Renārs Magone scored 12 points.

Edmunds Elksnis took care of 16 points for the home team, Ervīns Jonāts had 14 points, but Klāvs Dubults and Jānis Engers scored 12 points each.

In the first match of the season, the people of Valmiera beat the “University of Latvia” (LU) with 85:70. In turn, the long-term leader of the previous season and the owner of the second place at the end of the season “Ogre” after an impressive 63:81 loss in his field “VEF Rīga” temporarily reached the last 13th place in the tournament table.

Last season, LIBL defeated Ogre twice convincingly – 114: 68 and 102: 67. Including games in the Latvian Basketball League (LBL), “Ogre” has always celebrated victory in eight mutual fights.

VEF Rīga, on the other hand, destroyed “Liepāja” at 104:63 (30:21, 24:14, 27:10, 23:18).

Legionnaires were the most productive of the Rigans today – Bald Olmens scored 21 points, Aizi Pinjeiro scored 18 points and 12 rebounds, Michael Kaiser scored 12 points, and Alexander Madsen scored 11 points. Kristers Zoriks and Aigars Šķēle scored ten points from Latvians.

Iļjs Gromovs and Roberts Krastiņš had 12 points each, Roberts Bērziņš scored 11 points, and Dāvis Geks scored ten points.

It has already been mentioned that the Rigans beat “Ogri” in the first round, but “Liepāja” allowed “Ventspils” to win in their field only at the end of the match.

Last season, Liepāja team remained in the last place in the competition of 14 teams. And the Rigans were also superior in both fights, although the victories went hand in hand with great effort – 76:70 and 81:76.

The basketball players of the capital have celebrated the victory in the last 11 battles in the mutual accounts of both teams. The last time Liepāja residents won the test match in September 2016 was 77:74, but in the official match “Liepāja” celebrated the victory in May 2015, winning the guests with 64:59.

From October 3 to December 5, 30 games between Latvian teams are planned. Meanwhile, seven Estonian teams will also play their mini-tournaments.

In the main tournament of the third season of LIBL, 13 teams are planned to play a two-round tournament, after which there will be playoffs – a quarter-final series and a “Final Four” tournament.

13 teams – six Latvian units – “VEF Rīga”, “Ogre”, “Ventspils”, “Valmiera Glass” / “Vidzeme University College”, “University of Latvia” and “Liepāja” will take part in the LIBL championship in the 2020/21 season, as also seven Estonian teams – Tallinn “Kalev” / “Cramo”, Rapla “Avis Utilitas”, “Parnu Sadam”, “University of Tartu”, Rakvere “Tarvas”, Tallinn “Kalev” / TLU and “TalTech”.

In the first Latvian-Estonian joint league tournament in the 2018/2019 season, “Ventspils” won the competition of 15 teams in both the main tournament and the Final 4, but the 2019/2020 season remained unfinished, first place in the main tournament suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic occupying “VEF Riga”, the second – “Ogre”, the third – “Kalev” / “Cramo” led by Robert Stelmacher and the fourth – “Ventspils”.
