The head of the Military Medical Academy and former chairman of the National Operational Headquarters (NSS) for the fight against the coronavirus Prof. Ventsislav Mutafchiiski has been nominated as a corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, it became known from the published list of admitted candidates. Along with Mutafchiyski candidate is the municipal councilor from GERB Prof. Ivo Petrov. The mathematician of NIGHT Prof. Nikolay Vitanov has been nominated as an academician, who will fight for one of the two places in the field of mathematical sciences. There is also a representative of the briefly functioning Medical Expert Council to the government of Boyko Borissov – in the Department of Biological Sciences, the candidate for corresponding member is the pharmacologist Prof. Georgi Momekov.
The competition was announced on May 17. The proposals were to be made within a month, and the selection of academics and corresponding members will take place in October. According to the rules, professors and doctors of sciences can participate in the competition. Candidates for academics must be corresponding members of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and specialists who have not reached the age of 65 by the date of announcing the competition may apply for corresponding members.
Among the candidates for academics are Education Minister Nikolay Denkov, former Health Minister Nikolay Petrov and Culture Minister Georgi Kostov, former Sofia University rectors Ivan Ilchev and Boyan Biolchev, and writer Vladimir Zarev. Candidates for the corresponding member are the writer Georgi Gospodinov, the publisher Ivan Granitski, the head of the neurosurgery clinic in “Pirogov” Dr. Nikolay Gabrovski.
According to the rules of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Bulgarian citizens who are corresponding members of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in the field of science are elected as academics; they have enriched science with particularly significant achievements; have received wide fame and recognition in the country and abroad with active public events related to science and its application and have active research and expert activity, as well as Bulgarian citizens with higher education, prominent figures of culture and art, whose achievements are indisputable national and international significance; with active public appearances related to the art, culture and spiritual development of the nation and have active creative and expert activity.
Bulgarian citizens who are professors and doctors of sciences who have not reached the age of 65 as of the date of announcing the competition are elected as corresponding members of BAS; they have enriched science with important achievements; have gained fame and recognition in the country and abroad with 2 active public appearances related to science and its application and have active research and expert activity.
The departments of the Assembly of Academicians and Corresponding Members (SACC) discuss a proposal of the Coordination Council of SACC for the number of places for corresponding members and academics in the respective scientific fields and areas, as well as proposals for the number of places. The proposals are discussed in the SACC, which submits them to the election commission of BAS.
The selection of academics and corresponding members of BAS is made by the academics. Academics and corresponding members of BAS are selected through a competition, which is announced once every two years.
Corresponding members who do not work under an employment contract receive a lifetime salary each month, which is equal to 30 percent of the salary of academics. After retiring, the academics receive a lifetime monthly salary of one deputy’s salary, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences told Dnevnik.
