Rees (dpa) – For the second time this week, a poisonous spider in a banana box on the Lower Rhine has called the fire brigade into action. A clerk at a supermarket in Rees spotted a large exotic spider in the overseas shipping box Thursday morning, a city spokesman said.
With the help of a glass, the animal was prevented from exploring the market. The fire brigade secured the glass until an expert from the Terra Zoo in Rheinberg arrived, who took the spider away. He identified the animal as a warmhouse giant crab spider. A bite is poisonous but not fatal.
A similar specimen turned up just two days ago in a banana box from the Dominican Republic at a discount grocery store in Krefeld. Here, too, the fire brigade was deployed.
