Venice to Introduce Entrance Tickets for Tourists in 2024: Plan to Limit Mass Tourism

Sep 12, 2023 at 10:31 PM Update: 21 minutes ago

Venice will experiment with entrance tickets for tourists next spring. People who come to the Italian city for a day must pay 5 euros to enter the historic center.

The city council approved the plan on Tuesday, which has been discussed for years. Venice has been struggling with problems due to mass tourism for years. The experiment will be conducted on thirty days in 2024, mainly on busy holidays and weekends.

Only day trippers have to pay. Tourists who sleep in a hotel in the city do not have to buy a ticket, because they are staying for several days. Children under the age of fourteen can also enter the city center for free.

The Venetian government hopes to limit the enormous influx of tourists in this way. Up to 100,000 people come to the city every day to see the famous canals and St. Mark’s Square.

The plan was previously postponed for fear of declining revenues. Critics think the system is only a symbolic action. According to them, the entrance tickets will not reduce visitor numbers.

UNESCO pointed out in July that Venice is at risk of “irreversible” damage due to the combination of mass tourism, climate change and other problems. The World Heritage Organization therefore wants to place the city on the list of endangered heritage and asked the city council of Venice to take measures.
