Venice, 24 November 2023 – While initiatives for remember Giulia Cecchettinkilled by her ex-boyfriend – and with her demonstrations against violence on women – the postal police closed the pro-Turetta groups from Facebook, acquiring screenshots and links to identify who created the pages but also the users who wrote comments. Meanwhile the young man, arrested in Germany, will be in Italy tomorrow, but he won’t be questioned until Monday.
In the meantime we try to understand in which prison he could be heldonce repatriated. The objective of those who will bring Turetta back to Italy is, in fact, protect him from a possible lynching in prison it’s yes self-harming gestures.
Returning to the initiatives for tomorrow, it should be noted that in all broadcasts Rai will have a red bench presentwhile sport is also mobilising, ei Serie A players they will take the field with a red mark on face.
Gino Cecchettin, Giulia’s father (in the center with hands clasped) intervenes at the installation of the red bench at the University of Padua
Two red bencheswere inaugurated atUniversity of Padua where Giulia was supposed to graduate last week. The young girl’s father was also present, Gino Cecchettin:
“You are the future, and each of you is trying to understand what was missing at all levels, from teachers to students, to parents, because I too ask myself questions, and perhaps discuss them, – is his speech -. Let’s try to understand what can be done, find a protocol, a way to eradicate violence, in particular violence against women.”
“I couldn’t help myself – said Giulia’s father, Gino Cecchettin addressed to hundreds of students gathered in the Engineering courtyard – from being here where Giulia spent her last years of study; I am also a former student of the faculty, I was unable to complete the course, which is why I invite and exhort the students to hold on and move forward otherwise you will have very great regrets for your whole life. But today we are here, for Giulia, and we must remember that something must come from this tragic event.”
The mural for Giulia Cecchettin painted in Vigonovo, in the province of Venice, the young woman’s town
For Cecchettin “the messages you are giving are fine, the silence, the noise are fine, but those will end, so I want each of us to look every day in our own lives at what we can do to improve it, not towards ourselves but towards of the loved one, of close people, of friends and above all of women. I feel like saying this from my heart, I will move so that something positive is born. Nobody will give Giulia back to me, but since Giulia’s death I want to give birth to many beautiful initiatives.”
Meanwhile, all the steps that led to themurder of Giulia on the evening of November 11, the actions of Filippo Turetta before and after the crime, but also other elements such as the witness’ call to 112 who reported the quarrel in the Vigonovo car park around 11.18pm in which the student was allegedly attacked for the first time by her ex-boyfriend. Filippo then took Giulia to the industrial area of Fossò where the girl was killed. The audio of the phone call to 112 was acquired by prosecutor’s office of Venicein charge of the investigation into Giulia’s death, but it is ruled out that a specific file has been opened at the moment, just as there is no second call to 112.
Another disturbing detail emerges from the investigations: Turetta would have purchased some online Scotch tape compatible with that piece of tape that was found in Fossò two or three days before of November 11th. The investigators are working to consider charging Turetta with the aggravating circumstances premeditation and also the crime of concealment of the corpse.
The premeditation it is a decisive variable that could lead him, if recognized, to a conviction all’ergastolo.
Meanwhile tomorrow Filippo Turetta, accused of the murder of Giulia Cecchettin, will be handed over to the Italian authorities: with an air force flight he will be transferred from Frankfurt to Venice, where he is expected to land around 12.30. The 22-year-old accused of voluntary homicide and kidnapping will be brought right in prison at the disposal of the judicial authority which will have 5 days to subject him to the guarantee interrogation. Furthermore, yesterday the change in Turetta’s defense was made known with the assignment given tolawyer Giovanni Carusofull professor of criminal law at the University of Padua, also following the controversies that hit the first lawyerthe lawyer Emanuele Compagno.
L’warrant interrogation of Turetta will not be held before Monday.
Filippo Turetta will be monitored on sight to avoid risks related to ”safety” but also ”to monitor possible self-harm risks”.
This is the practice that exists in Italian prisons. The student will be visited by the doctorthen to the psychologist (the visit by a psychiatrist could also be evaluated) to evaluate the ”suicidal risk”.
Given the media outcry and also the crime of which he is accused, for the young man there seems to be, in addition toisolation ”even one 24-hour visual surveillance”.
After the prosecutor’s interrogation, also at the request of the defense, the judge could prepare other measures to protect the arrested person.
As for the structure where he will wait the warrant interrogation, throughout the day there have been rumors, even fueled by qualified sources, about where the engineering student who attacked Giulia and then abandoned his body near Lake Barcis will be taken. The German police will hand Turetta over to the Italians in the security area of Frankfurt airport after the judges gave the green light to the handover on the basis of the European arrest warrant. Carabinieri sources report that the Air Force flight will leave at 10.45 am from Frankfurt, will stop in Venice and then Turetta will be transferred to Verona. At first the news spread that he would be taken to the Santa Maria Maggiore prison in the lagoon city which is located a few meters from the court and the office of judge Benedetta Vitolo who will question him. Then a ‘ballot’ emerged between Padua and Verona, which were considered more suitable prisons for security.
Qualified sources assure that the choice ultimately fell on Montorio prison in Verona where two suicides have been recorded in recent weeks but it cannot be ruled out that this is a ‘misdirection’ to keep the young man’s return to Italy ‘secret’.
The two groups are no longer online ‘The girls of Filippo Turetta’ e ‘The girls of Filippo Turetta 2.0’, created on Facebook after the 22-year-old’s arrest for Giulia’s murder. Meanwhile, the Postal Police already has captured screenshots and links to identify who created the pages but also the users who wrote comments that could constitute a crime. Web monitoring is also underway to intercept any other social groups damaging the image of Giulia and her family.
With the memory of Giulia this morning the president of the Veneto region Luca Zaia he began his speech at the Verona Fair with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni present. “In Veneto we are not experiencing a good moment, it is necessary, and I do it from the heart, remember Giulia – he said -. We cannot help but remember her, she is one of our citizens, we are close to her family, who lived through the horror and are now living a unimaginable pain“. The work among young people against violence against women is good, “but we adults we can’t call ourselves out, we need team and community work”, which isolates both the “caveman who behaves badly with women, and those who are “struggling with”mental diseasebecause often it is also about this”. Zaia invites everyone to fight together so that “Giulia is not classified as the 105th victim” and for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women of tomorrow announced “tangible signs that aim to raise awareness in the hearts and minds of everyone, starting with men. Balbi Palace (headquarters of the regional council, ed.) lit up in red is one of these, the red chair that stands out in the atrium with the word seat occupied is intended to act as a warning to all those who enter and exit the Region”.
Rai is also committed to the issue of violence against women, with many initiatives: on Saturday 25 November there will be a red bench in all public TV programmes, the red ribbon in the logos of the TV networks, an advert to invite everyone, and in especially men, to reflect, a promo to “correct” sexist clichés and the headquarters in Viale Mazzini, in Rome, lit up in red. The schedule is also organized ad hoc, to celebrate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. All Rai publications – Tg, Tgr, Gr, RaiNews24 and Rainews.it – will dedicate extensive information coverage. In particular, RaiNews24 will collect reports and interviews in a special broadcast from 2.30 pm “Direct line” for the day on violence against women: hosted by Roberta Rizzo.
Also the world of sport comes together against violence against women: from football to rugby, from basketball to volleyball, there are many initiatives, such as special shirts, red bands, minutes of noise with the aim of raising ever more awareness. For example all the races of the 13th day of the Serie A championship they will be colored red: the symbol of the campaign #unredtoviolence. The players and referees will come onto the pitch with a red mark on their faces; the captains of all the teams will wear the armband symbolizing the day and, before the match, together with the referees, they will wear a special t-shirt with the writing “Football says NO to violence against women”; at the time of the pitch draw, the two captains will read a message. In Serie B, however, it will be played with a red ball.
Tomorrow Venetian Motorway Concessions will hang a red ribbon at the toll booths of their motorway sections. The company has started the voluntary certification process for gender equality; a conference will be held on this topic next Monday 27 November, introduced by President Monica Manto and CEO Maria Rosaria Anna Campitelli, the first entirely female top management of a motorway company, who wanted to strongly mark a path on issues of equality and culture increasingly inclusive and respectful of gender skills.
