From January 2023 Italian Venice will charge tourists a fee for visiting. Thus, the city will be the first in the world to introduce such a rule.

According to the decision of the City Council of Venice, from January 16, 2023, the entrance to the city will be paid and will be from 3 to 10 euros, depending on the season.
Authorized inspectors will also appear in the city, who will have the right to stop tourists and require them to confirm payment for entry. In case of violation, visitors to Venice face a fine.

The collected funds will be used to reduce the cost of garbage collection in Venice, since the price of this utility service in the city is higher than in other Italian cities.
At the same time, tourists who will spend one night in Venice, residents of the city, as well as their guests, may not pay for a visit. To do this, they will be able to download a certificate from a special platform, which will be ready by the end of 2022.
“The goal is to discourage one-day tourism at certain times of the year and encourage multi-day tourism in accordance with the sophistication and uniqueness of the city,” the city council of Venice explained its decision.
Recall that last year Italy banned the entry of large cruise ships into the Venice lagoon to protect this place from excessive tourism.
