The Venezuelan head of state Nicolás Maduro had himself vaccinated against the corona virus with the Russian vaccine Sputnik V. “I’m vaccinated,” a smiling Maduro said on state television on Saturday after he and his wife, Cilia Flores, received their first dose. “I heard that you can speak Russian afterwards,” joked the 58-year-old left nationalist.
Venezuela began vaccinating health workers on February 18. In total, it has ordered ten million cans in Russia. From Monday, the Chinese vaccine from the manufacturer Sinopharm will also be inoculated in the South American country. Venezuela received 500,000 cans of this.
Caracas is also supposed to receive at least 1.4 million cans of Astrazeneca through the international corona vaccination initiative Covax, but delivery is halted due to a dispute over payment.
According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 141,000 corona cases have been registered in the country with a population of 30 million, and almost 1,400 people have died.
