The Venezuelan Society of Infectious Diseases issued a statement on October 11 in which it warned that the vaccines “Abdala and Soberana 2 should not be administered as part of a mass vaccination scheme (against covid-19) as long as they do not meet the requirements of the corresponding scientific endorsement ”.
Venezuelan infectologists pointed out that “the probable use of these vaccine candidates in the pediatric population, how Cuba and Nicaragua are doing, generates even greater concern.”
“We insist that these vaccine candidates lack sufficient scientific endorsement to be used in the population in a massive way and much less to be used currently in children and adolescents,” said the Venezuelan infectologists in their pronouncement.
Nicaragua will acquire seven million Cuban vaccines of the Abdala, Soberana and Soberana 2 brands, which to date do not have the approval of the World Health Organization (WHO), for its population between two and 17 years old.
According to the Ortega Murillo regime, this population segment is made up of 2.1 million children and adolescents.
Previously, the regime indicated that the country’s vaccination plan only contemplated the population 30 years of age and older, suggesting that it would not vaccinate the minor population, but on October 2 it surprised Nicaraguans again with the Announcement of the authorization for the emergency use of Cuban vaccines and their application in children and adolescents.
The Soberana and Abdala vaccines have only been authorized, in addition to Cuba, by Iran, Vietnam and Venezuela. So far only the island has used the Sovereign to inoculate children over two years of age, as well as adolescents.
Venezuelan doctors said that currently in the world there are few vaccines against covid-19 that are in use under the authorization of recognized international regulatory agencies and Venezuela itself.
“The few countries that have achieved high rates of vaccination in adults are making progress recently by immunizing adolescents with widely studied biologics, such as the Pfizer vaccine; while other countries such as Argentina and Chile have also started vaccination in children between 6 and 11 years old also with inactivated virus vaccines, such as Sinovac, with the scientific support of published studies and extensive experience in China ”, they explained.
According to infectologists, children have not been a priority in vaccination, because they have a low incidence of severe and critical forms of covid-19 and, furthermore, because recent studies establish that the role of children as transmitters of the disease does not seem be as important as it was considered, “since they have fewer ACE2 receptors and are able to eliminate the virus more quickly than adults, due to a very good innate immunity.”
Finally, the Venezuelan infectologists call on the Venezuelan authorities to “guarantee the immunization of the population with biologics of recognized efficacy and safety, with sufficient endorsement and recognition from various regulatory agencies and with sufficient corresponding scientific support.”
