Venezuelan opposition calls for mass demonstration – 2024-08-30 00:22:42

Supporters of the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro take part in a march in support of the ‘Law against hatred and fascism’ this Thursday, in Caracas (Venezuela). Hundreds of Chavistas mobilized this Thursday in Caracas, to the headquarters of the National Assembly (AN, Parliament), to give their support to a draft ‘law against fascism, neo-fascism and similar expressions’, currently in development, and that President Nicolás Maduro asked to be approved “very quickly”. Venezuelan opposition protests this Wednesday in Caracas against the court ruling that validated the controversial victory of the president Nicolas Maduro in the elections held a month ago, while the Chavistas mobilize to celebrate the victory of this president proclaimed by the National Electoral Council (CNE).

The main opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD)called his supporters to the streets one month after the elections in which, he insists, his candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutiaobtained the majority of votes.

«We Venezuelans are once again in the streets. This August 28, as a family, with your children, with your grandchildren and with your certificate in hand, we confirm that a certificate kills a sentence»said the PUD on August 24, when it announced the call for the protest.

The platform invited Venezuelans to print the certificate corresponding to their voting center from a website where it claims to have published “83.5%” of these papers obtained, according to the opposition, through people who were witnesses and members of the table during the electoral day, documents that the government describes as “false.”

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado (l) speaks during a press conference with Venezuelan presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia on Monday, after the elections held on July 28, in Caracas (Venezuela). Machado said that the majority opposition has managed to obtain 73% of the votes cast in the presidential elections this Sunday, which give – she said – the victory to the former ambassador Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, with an “overwhelming” difference in the elections, even though the electoral body declared the Chavista Nicolas Maduro as the winner. Meanwhile, Chavismo responds today to the call of the ruler United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) to celebrate Maduro’s re-election in the streets, a victory questioned by much of the international community.

The first vice president of the formation, Diosdado Cabello -appointed Minister of the Interior and Justice on Tuesday- explained that the march is to celebrate Maduro’s “victory” as well as to prepare for what is to come.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) – presided over by the Chavista Caryslia Rodriguez– validated the results announced by the CNE, which grant Maduro a third consecutive term, until 2031.

The TSJ assumed the “validation” of the results at the request of Maduro, who filed an appeal that was never known and for which the 10 former candidates were summoned, although González Urrutia declined to attend, considering that this verification is not the responsibility of the Supreme Court, but of the CNE, which has not yet published the disaggregated data, despite it being included in the schedule.
