Venezuela received 2,611,000 doses of the vaccine against covid-19 Sputnik Light from Russia, which they will use as reinforcement. This was reported by the Vice Minister of Resources, Technology and Regulation of the Ministry of Health, Gerardo Briceño.
“(It is) the first shipment of Sputnik Light, the booster vaccine for the entire population of 6.8 million vaccines that will arrive in the next few days,” Briceño told the Venezuelan state television channel.
The deputy minister explained that this vaccine is “scientifically proven” and is “very effective”, especially “for the reinforcement of the population.”
The Venezuelan Ministry of Health approved this single-dose vaccine against the coronavirus last May. This was reported then by the Russian Direct Investment Fund in a statement.
Vaccination in Venezuela
Sputnik Light, developed with the first component of the Russian two-dose Sputnik V vaccine, has an efficacy of 79.4% 28 days after inoculation, according to the fund.
In this sense, Briceño explained that this vaccine will be used as a booster for those already vaccinated and will begin to be applied “from January.”
“We must continue to vaccinate, we must complete 90% of our vaccinated population, not only adults over 18 years of age, but also children,” he commented.
Therefore, he asked the population to be confident that vaccines “are effective, are safe and should be used for the prevention of coronavirus.”
Finally, the deputy minister asked the population to continue “maintaining social distance” and “prevention” at Christmas.
