MADRID, 26 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The opposition Manuel Rosales, governor of the state of Zulia (west) and rival of Hugo Chávez in the elections held in 2006 in Venezuela, has presented his candidacy for the elections scheduled for July 28, a vote in which the current president, Nicolás Maduro will try to obtain a new mandate.
Rosales has become the latest politician to run as a candidate, as reported by the Fuerza Vecinal party, which has supported the candidacy of the governor of Zulia, leader of the Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT) formation, part of the Democratic Unitary Platform coalition ( PUD), which has denounced in recent hours that the authorities have prevented the registration of Corina Yoris as a candidate.
“Fuerza Vecinal, being consistent with the electoral and democratic route, on the side of unity, we have decided to support the presidential candidacy of Governor Manuel Rosales,” the party said on its account on the social network X. “Given the political situation, economic and social situation that we live in today, we cannot leave Venezuelans without a real option for change. With the strength of each neighbor in the country we are going to fight with the true tool we have, which is the vote, to change Venezuela,” he argued.
In this way, Rosales, governor of Zulia in two stages – between 2000 and 2008 and now in office since 2021 – is running for the second time as a candidate for presidential elections, after being defeated in 2006 by Chávez – who won about 63 percent of the votes, compared to Rosales’ 37 percent. At the moment, the opposition politician has not commented on his candidacy.
Hours earlier, the PUD had denounced that the Government “never” has allowed them access “to the application system to be able to register the unit’s candidacy”, although it has “systematically” tried to do so from day one. “We demand that the deadline to apply, which is our right, be restored,” he said, after Yoris said that the system remains “completely closed” both for her and for any other candidate who wants to apply for the so-called democratic “unity.”
Maduro does appear on the official list of candidates already confirmed for the presidential elections – made up of a total of twelve personnel at the close of the registration period –, which also includes other independent politicians who, for the Democratic Unitary Platform, do not They represent a true break with ‘Chavismo’.
