Venezuela: London court refuses to release gold reserves to Nicolás Maduro

In the dispute over gold reserves worth around 890 million euros, a British court ruled in favor of the Venezuelan opposition leader and self-appointed interim president Juan Guaidó. The British news agency PA reported from the London High Court.

The gold is in a Bank of England vault. It was requested by the Board of Directors of the Venezuelan Central Bank on behalf of authoritarian President Nicolás Maduro to alleviate the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. The Bank of England refused to surrender because the gold reserves were also being used by the counter-government led by Guaidó.

The High Court now found that “the British government clearly recognizes Guaidó as Venezuela’s head of state”. This necessarily means that Maduro will no longer be considered President of Venezuela, the judge responsible. The lawyers on the Maduro side immediately announced that they would appeal.
