Venezuela is willing to strengthen “comprehensive strategic association” with China

The Government of Venezuela expressed this Friday its willingness to strengthen the “comprehensive strategic association” with China, after the unprecedented re-election of Xi Jinping, by the National People’s Assembly (ANP) of the Asian giant, for a third term until 2028.

“This opportunity is propitious to express the willingness of the Venezuelan government to work together, with a view to strengthening the comprehensive strategic China-Venezuela association and taking it to the highest levels for the benefit of both peoples,” the Venezuelan government said in a statement.

The PNA on Friday ratified the permanence of Xi, also general secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC), after the body approved in 2018 a constitutional amendment that eliminated the limit of two consecutive five-year terms for Chinese presidents.

The 2,952 deputies present in the Assembly, in which it is highly infrequent for opposition to the measures presented, unanimously approved Xi’s continuation as head of state.

In this regard, the Venezuelan government congratulated the Chinese president and assured that it “trusts that the great Chinese nation will continue to advance rapidly towards the achievement of a modern socialist society.”

Earlier, President Nicolás Maduro sent congratulations to his Chinese counterpart and assured that both nations will continue “the paths of building a new humanity with a common destiny, cooperation and well-being.”

China and Venezuela have strengthened ties in recent times, especially during the time of the late President Hugo Chavez (1999-2013), relations that Maduro has intensified during his government.

China has been, since the last decade, one of the most important trading partners of Venezuela, a country that pays a large part of its credits and imports with crude oil, an energy source for which the Caribbean country has the largest proven reserves on the planet.
