Caracas. The Venezuelan government accused Brazil this Saturday of trying to “deceive” the international community, a day after the administration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva denounced an “offensive tone” from Caracas amid growing diplomatic tensions.
A statement released by Foreign Minister Yván Gil maintained that Itamaraty – Brazil’s Foreign Ministry – “is trying to deceive the international community, posing as victims in a situation where they have clearly acted as victimizers.”
“Itamaraty has undertaken a brazen and rude aggression against the Constitutional President, Nicolás Maduro Moros, institutions and public powers,” the document added.
Tensions have risen due to Brazil’s veto of Venezuela‘s entry into the BRICS group – a group of emerging economies made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa to which other members have also joined – and questions about the re-election of Maduro for a third six-year period in power (2025-2031) amid complaints of opposition fraud.
“The Brazilian government notes with surprise the offensive tone adopted” by “Venezuelan authorities in relation to Brazil and its national symbols,” a statement from Itamaraty said on Friday.
Lula’s government has refused to recognize Maduro as the winner of the July 28 elections if a detailed count of the elections is not published. The opposition claims a victory for its candidate Edmundo González Urrutia.
The cracks were further opened by Brazil’s veto of Venezuela’s accession to the BRICS last week at the bloc’s summit in Kazan, Russia.
The Venezuelan government summoned its ambassador in Brasilia for consultations and called Brazil’s charge d’affaires in Caracas.
Maduro accused Itamaraty of “conspiring against Venezuela,” although he avoided holding Lula directly responsible for the BRICS veto.
However, in a sign of rising tensions, the Venezuelan National Police (PNB) published an image on Instagram on Thursday with a shadowed face resembling Lula’s and a Brazilian flag with the caption: “He who messes with Venezuela it dries up.”
The PNB is headed by Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, from the hardest wing of Chavismo.
Foreign Minister Gil’s statement, which does not mention Lula, urged Itamaraty to “desist from interfering in issues that only concern Venezuelans.”
