The annoying injections will be replaced by a powdered drug that can be taken nasally. With a resolution proposed by the Health Councilor, Manuela Lanzarin, the Veneto Regional Council has given the green light to a significant simplification of glucagon therapy to combat severe hypoglycemia in some categories of people suffering from insulin-dependent diabetes.
INSIGHTS
It was in Veneto authorized the use of glucagon powder nasally rather than with an injection, using the extra Lea financing formula (Essential levels of assistance) and drawing from the regional budget up to a maximum of 300 thousand euros. «This precious nasal drug – Lanzarin points out – was first made reimbursable by the Italian drug agency Aifa for a period of 12 months.
However, recently, Aifa itself, following the outcome of the renegotiation of the negotiating conditions with the manufacturing company, reclassified the medicine for human use (Baqsimi), the only one on the market in the nasal powder formulation, in Class C, with burden borne by the citizen. An obvious inconvenience for diabetics, as well as a considerable cost. This is why we have decided to make the drug free in Veneto for minors and adults with certain serious characteristics or particular personal conditions.”
It can be obtained upon presentation of a prescription form by the patient to the hospital pharmacy of the local health authority of residence. Azienda Zero was appointed to purchase the drug and is asked to urgently activate the procedure. However, the Region has authorized Ulls to purchase glucagon in nasal powder, should the clinical need arise, even while waiting for the regional competition to be completed.
