Hundreds of Ankara residents attacked homes and shops owned by Syrian migrants after news that a Turkish youth had been stabbed to death in a quarrel with Syrians, the DPA reported.
Angry locals raided Ankara’s Altundag district last night, throwing stones at Syrian apartments and looting shops, local media reported. Photos on social media showed broken cars in a burst of dangerous outrage against migrants in Turkey, home to more than 4 million refugees, 3.6 million of whom are Syrians.
A Syrian man was wounded in the head after a stone fell into an apartment, Kerem Kanuk, head of the Turkish Red Crescent, wrote on Twitter.
The situation was brought under control early today, the Ankara governor said on Twitter, urging people not to succumb to provocative information.
The stabbing and death of 18-year-old Emirhan Yalchen on Wednesday in a fight in Altundag provoked a riot. The Anatolian news agency reported that two foreigners had been detained in connection with the death of a Turkish teenager, BTA confirmed.
Locals blame the Syrians for killing the young man. Details of the fight are not yet known.
Anti-immigrant sentiment in the country has risen in recent weeks after photos on social media showed hundreds of Afghans illegally crossing the border into Iran and entering Turkey.
The main opposition People’s Republican Party has sharpened its rhetoric against refugees, promising to repatriate them if it comes to power.
Turkey is building walls on its borders with Iran and Iraq to stop illegal migration, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a television interview late last night.
