On the occasion of the second edition of rare blood awareness weekwhich takes place from From 14 to 20 November 2022the french blood instituteEFS extension), puts the spotlight on this problem of public health.

Wanted rare blood

The target. the goal? Raise awareness as many people as possible au Don de sangand more particularly people of African or Caribbean descent, who are more likely to have highly sought-after blood for transfusion.

Imbalance and transfusion challenges

While most of us are familiar with blood types A, B, O and their Rhesus + and – system, their diversity is actually much greater and creates real transfusion challenges. Rare bloods are blood types whose frequency in the population is low enough to create an imbalance between the number of donors and patient needs.

3 key figures

– A blood type is considered rare when it affects fewer than 4 people in 1,000.
– 700,000 people have a rare blood group in France;
– 250 rare blood types listed in France.

Find compatible donors

It is therefore a question of finding blood donors compatible with the patients to offer them the most suitable transfusion.

Anyone can carry rare blood.

However, in metropolitan France, people from the African continent, the West Indies and the Indian Ocean or who have African ancestry are more likely to carry a rare blood type or a phenotype called “d’interest”.

This search for rare blood can prove problematic due to particularly high transfusion needs within certain populations, particularly due to the presence of conditions such as sickle cell anemia, which mainly affects people of African or West Indian descent.

For patients with particular blood characteristics there is no alternative, i.e. there is no other compatible blood group for transfusion. For this we need blood donors with these same characteristics. Their gift is vital!
