Vendée Globe. Christmas before its time for Maxime Sorel

Maxime Sorel, skipper of V&B Mayenne who sails alone from Brazil is back in the leading pack. He is finally with people and in 10th place. Something to party.

His risk-taking paid off. He passed the front and is now only 120 miles from MACSF. He should keep coming back. Have a good Christmas.

“Some told me it wouldn’t go through, but in fact the depression got behind me: I did well to whip and do my own thing. It’s cool because I won’t have too harsh conditions and, behind, they will slow down. It also comes back to those in front. It should pick up again, I made my routings, not yet those of the others. I feel like I have more wind so obviously I’m going to pick up. We are watching two other depressions which are ahead and which seem a little simpler with a second which should even bring us to Cape Horn. If we could get together and vote so that this weather pattern remains frozen, I’m a taker!

I think that foiling boats which had to go very fast do not go fast. Our drift boats are clearly ahead. I had planned to do the tour in 90 days, but now, if I continue like this, I’ll put less. There are two rooms, two atmospheres. In front of us.

I would be happy to have little friends around. I am alone from Brazil. All my decisions, I take them alone. It’s heavy, it’s cool to have people around you. There, it’s been a while since it lasts.

For Christmas I have a ‘Kinder’ Advent Calendar and a Santa Claus Hood prepared by my team. I have to ask them when I can open it. It’s a stuffing bag, it’s not full and not very heavy, but there is plenty to put things in! I know there is foie gras! I asked my team to make a special menu for the 25th. One of my friends is the son of Olivier Roellinger, two-star chef in Saint-Malo, who makes me my bread and was supposed to make me my meal. Except that he had concerns because of the health crisis. So it was my team who prepared this: foie gras on ‘Krisprolls’ (laughs).

I love spending this time with my family. I take this moment to find everyone. It’s a joyful moment, of exchange and of pleasure, so I’m a little sad not to be with them, but I will be doing visios with them. And then it was I who chose to compete in the Vendée Globe, and I feel good where I am too. We will make up for it next year!

We have to pass a message through the vacation, tell people to be careful and not to transmit the virus to each other at Christmas: we would all like to have a huge party on arrival! ”
