“Vélolignes Montpellier”, the future Express Bike Network linking the municipalities of the Metropolis

The Métropole has positioned the ecological and solidarity transition as a priority for the 2020-2026 mandate. An unprecedented envelope of €1,426 million is devoted to mobility projects to offer fellow metropolitan citizens a peaceful and breathable living environment as well as alternatives to transport. autosolism. €150 million are dedicated to active mobility and more particularly to bicycles.

All the actions undertaken contribute to creating a real cycling ecosystem in the Metropolis. This ambitious cycling policy must first of all, thanks to the creation of a “city at child’s height”, allow anyone who wishes to travel by bike with complete peace of mind.

The potential of this mode of transport as well as the advantages of a cycling territory, whether in terms of air quality, health, household purchasing power, but also image and attractiveness for the territory, therefore of economic efficiency for companies, no longer needs to be demonstrated.

Building a cycling metropolis involves providing it as a priority with an Express Bike Network, i.e. a continuous, secure and comfortable cycling network that connects the hearts of the villages of our municipalities to the heart of the Metropolis to the place de la Comédie, but also the municipalities of the territory between them.

This high-level service Express Bike Network will be the backbone of the cycling network of our Metropolis. Called “Vélolignes montpelliéraines”, it is committed to ensuring the following qualities:

  • Meet the challenges of capacity, travel efficiency and service;
  • Ensure safety and comfort through cycle paths separated from car traffic (except in restricted areas); present direct routes with few crossroads to limit “foot-to-earth”;
  • Secure intersections;
  • Present additional guarantees of quality and comfort with a constant quality of the coating and regular maintenance;
  • Clearly identify the network;
  • Set up identity signage (horizontal signage, vertical signage, regular marking, etc.)

It will be made up as follows:

To: Juvignac – Castelnau le Lez
B : Rocade
C : Carnon – Juvignac
D: Mauguio – Castries

1: Montpellier Corum – Castelnau le Lez

  • 1a: Castelnau le Lez – Jacou
  • 1b: Castelnau le Lez – Saint Geniès des Mourgues
  • 1c: Vendargues – Saint Brès

2: Montpellier Antigone – Mauguio
3: Montpellier Odysseum – South of France station
4 : Montpellier Antigone – Lattes Agau

  • 4a: Lattes Agau – Carnon
  • 4b : Lattes Agau – Rocade C

5 : Montpellier Quai Laurens – Montpellier Tournezy
6: Montpellier Dubout – Montpellier La Condamine

  • 10a: Montpellier Les Arceaux – Saint Gély du Fesc
  • 10b: Montpellier Les Arceaux – Montferrier – sur – Lez

11: Clapiers Girac – Prades le Lez: 5.5 km

To this network of Vélolignes will be added a cycle ring around the city center of Montpellier.

In total, the Vélolignes Network will consist of approximately 230 km of linear, 70% of which will be completed during the 2020-2026 mandate.

It will naturally be supplemented by a finer mesh, made up of liaison and local networks. These complementary networks will allow a fallback on the Express Network and a fine service of all our territories.

Each resident of the Metropolis will then benefit from a local network close to their home to join a link network and then the Express Network.

The future structuring transport network (ter, trams, bustram, and now cycle lines) will thus truly give citizens the possibility of moving around differently on the territory of the Metropolis and will therefore commit the territory even more towards the necessary ecological and solidarity transition in order to combat climate change.
