At the end of October, owners of vehicles who have “forgotten” to insure them or have them pass a technical inspection will receive a “rabasaki” with fines from 250 to 1,000 euros. The General Secretariat of Information Systems and Digital Governance is ready to proceed with the first cross-checking of data to identify vehicles that are circulating without security or that have not passed KTEO.
Digital trap
Those caught in the digital trap will be asked to pay the prescribed fines while in case of non-compliance they will be faced with doubling the fines and removal of plates and license.
Electronic crossings will be carried out per calendar semester, while according to the current legislation, violators face fines:
The fines
From 250 to 1,000 euros if the vehicle is found to be uninsured. Specifically, the law provides for a fine of 1,000 euros for public use buses and trucks, 500 euros for passenger cars and other vehicles of any nature and 250 euros for two-wheelers.
The amount of the road tax (plus annual fees) in the case of uninsured vehicles, if at least one year’s road tax debt is established.
400 euros if the vehicle has not been subjected to a periodic inspection by a Vehicle Technical Inspection Center.
When do fines double?
In the event of a repeat offence, fines are doubled and the vehicle’s license and state plates are revoked. They are returned only upon presentation of the relevant insurance policy or the valid technical inspection report of the vehicle or the certificate of non-payment of road tax, as the case may be, and proof of payment of the fine.
Recheck
Three months after notification of the penalty act, the law stipulates that when the electronic cross-check reveals an infringement, a second electronic cross-check must be carried out. If, during this check, non-compliance of the holder of the vehicle’s registration license (owner or keeper of the vehicle) is found, the registration license and state plates of the vehicle are removed.
Administrative sanctions
The act of imposing administrative sanctions on the license holder is sent without delay to the competent police authority of his place of residence, in order to proceed with the removal of the vehicle’s registration data and their delivery to the Department of Transport and Communications of the Region that issued the relevant act.
The vehicle’s registration license and number plates are only returned upon presentation of the relevant insurance policy or the valid technical inspection report of the vehicle or the certificate of non-payment of road tax, as the case may be, and proof of payment of the fine as the case may be.
