Mexico City. The motor industry in Mexico achieved its best first quarter in sales of light vehicles since the same period in 2017, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
According to the progress of sales to the public in the domestic market of the Administrative Registry of the Automotive Industry of Light Vehicles (Raiavl), sales of light vehicles nationwide amounted to 349,752 units during the period January-March 2024 , which represented an annual advance of 10.9 percent, since they had their best first quarter since 2017, when 378,885 vehicles were sold at that time.
Given that the Mexican economy grew just over 3.0 percent in 2023 and that the first quarter of 2024 is expected to show a slowdown, domestic vehicle sales increased in the months of February and March.
While this marked a recovery from the collapse in sales of the crisis due to the covid-19 pandemic, as they are 5.01 percent above the sales of the first quarter of 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic occurred.
The factories return to normal, while the supply of parts and sensors is definitively normalized after the problems of recent years. The supply chain breathes easier.
Thus, in March of this year, 124,395 units were sold to the public in the domestic market, 9.8 percent more compared to February, so the national automotive industry achieved its best March in sales since 2017 (137,245 light vehicles ).
In its annual comparison, Inegi reported that the sale of vehicles in the third month of 2024 was 4.7 percent higher than that reported in March 2023 (118,801), that is, 5,594 more units were sold in the last 12 months.
