Vehicle production advanced 0.6% in the first quarter: Inegi

Mexico City. In the first quarter of the year, 927,781 light vehicles were produced in Mexico, a figure slightly higher by 0.61 percent compared to the 922,177 units that were produced in the national territory during the same period but last year, according to meet this Friday the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

In March alone, the production of light vehicles totaled 301,976 units, which implied a decrease of 12.7 percent compared to the 346,124 that were reported in the same month but the previous year.

When presenting the Administrative Registry of the light vehicle automotive industry (Raiavl), Inegi stated that of the total vehicles produced in the country during the first quarter, 225,946 or the equivalent of 24.4 percent of the total were cars and 701,000 835 or 75.6 percent are trucks.

According to Inegi figures, General Motors is the consortium that reported the highest production of light vehicles between January and March, with a total of 208,474 units, a figure 10.7 percent higher than the 188,378 reported between January. and March 2023.

Then there is Nissan, which reported a production of 163,114 units in the first three months of the year, an amount 8.8 percent higher compared to the 149,908 vehicles produced in the same period of the previous year.

In the case of Stellantis, the consortium that integrates the Fiat and Chrysler brands in national territory, production was 104,108 light vehicles from January to March, an amount 19.2 percent lower than the 128,914 reported in the first quarter of last year.

During March alone, General Motors vehicle production was 69,216 units, an increase of 7.4 percent compared to the same month in 2023. At Nissan it added 50,810 and at Stellantis 31,921, figures 12.2 percent. percent and 35.6 percent lower, respectively.

Exports are on the rise

Inegi statistics also show that during March a total of 286 thousand 2 units were exported, an increase of 4.8 percent compared to the 272 thousand 687 reported in the same month of 2023.

From January to March, the total number of vehicles sent abroad totaled 824,971 units, an increase of 11.2 percent when compared to the 741,306 reported in the first three months of last year.

General Motors is also established as the main driver of exports, with a total of 65,797 units, which represented an increase of 15.6 percent compared to the 56,927 reported in March 2023.

Between January and March, the total number of vehicles exported by this company reached 198,756 units, an increase of 23.9 percent compared to the 160,464 vehicles reported in the first quarter of 2023.
