A vehicle has exploded on the American side of a border bridge between Canada and the United States, the Rainbow Bidge. According to authorities, two passengers were killed. A border post employee was injured, a source told Reuters.
The explosion took place at a checkpoint in the American city of Niagara Falls. The vehicle had traveled from Niagara Falls at high speed and crashed into the border station, a city spokesperson told the AP. The incident led to the closure of four border crossings in the region. In the meantime, only the border crossing at the Rainbow Bridge is said to be closed.
According to the governor, there is currently no indication that this is a terrorist attack. Earlier, the Reuters news agency reported that this could not be ruled out.
‘Following developments closely’
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau initially responded that it was “a very serious situation at Niagara Falls.” The White House reported that President Biden is “monitoring developments closely.”
The FBI’s counter-terrorism division is investigating the explosion with local authorities. According to authorities, the situation is being “closely monitored”, but it currently appears to be an ordinary accident.
