New York. What the Oscars are to actors, the Met Gala is to fashion designers. Due to the pandemic, the fashion world had to wait over a year for the world-famous festival in the New York Metropolitan Museum. On September 13th it will take place again under the motto “American Independence”. However, insiders criticize the guest list.
The fundraising event usually takes place on the 1st Monday in May each year, but has been postponed to September in 2021. Often referred to as the Party of the Year, the Met Ball gala is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute. The annual budget of the institute, which is celebrating its 75th birthday this year and is now named after Wintour, is estimated at several million dollars in revenue. According to the platform, an entry ticket alone costs Business Insider $ 30,000, table tickets ranged from $ 275,000 to millions.
The event also celebrates the first of two exhibitions on the history of American fashion. “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” will be followed by “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” from May 2022. Both should be on view until September 2022.
Tiktok and Instagram instead of film and television
Although the guest list this year is smaller than usual due to corona, some prominent guests are already known: poet Amanda Gorman, tennis professional Naomi Osaka and singer Billie Eilish are expected.
In addition, there are more influencers on the coveted guest list this year: Among others, the 20-year-old Tiktokerin Addison Rae, who built over 81 million followers with her dance videos, or the 20-year-old Emma Chamberlain, who has more than ten million subscribers on YouTube recorded.
First vegan food at the gala
Of course, the guests of the Met Gala also have to adhere to special corona rules. Only guests who are fully vaccinated and also wear masks are allowed to come. These may only be removed for eating or drinking.
Another special feature this year: For the first time in the history of the Met Gala, there will be a completely vegan menu. Ten New York chefs were selected for this, who prepare starters, main courses and desserts without any animal products.
For the first time, the Met Gala will be streamed live – under this link. It starts at 5.30 p.m. local time (German time 11.30 p.m.).
