The vegan sausages and burgers have as much right to their names as their meatier counterparts, he ruled The Supreme Court of the European Union on Friday.
Judges at the European Court of Justice said EU countries could not stop companies making plant-based meat alternatives from calling them ‘burgers’ or ‘sausages’.
It’s a victory for French lobby group Protéines France, which launched a lawsuit last year along with two other vegetarian associations and California’s Beyond Meat after the French government banned it from using terms like steak and ham for its plant-based protein products, Politico reported. .
This means that – unless a member state has already created a law defining what constitutes a sausage or a burger – it cannot prohibit competing vegan products from using generic terms for its meat alternatives.
However, the judges said member countries could step in if “specific conditions for the sale or promotion of food mislead the consumer,” according to a court statement.
